Our Mission

Our Mission is to expand and empower the West Coast Swing community in Texas and beyond by providing a safe, growth-focused space for regular dancers to comfortably and respectfully enjoy the social dance. Through weekly workshops and socials, we hope to encourage new and seasoned dancers to practice, learn, and continue to participate in the dance community.

The Promise

We ask that all participants uphold our ideals both on and off the dance floor. By participating in Remix Weekly, dancers agree to:

1.

Be respectful of fellow participants at all times, in language and deed.

2.

Always seek consent.

a. Clearly communicated consent is required when asking someone to dance

b. We love dance videos! But please ensure that you have permission from ALL parties involved (leader(s), follower(s), and potential videographer) before posting anywhere.

3.

Uphold best practices regarding your safety and the safety of others

4.

Be considerate when in workshops so as not to disrupt fellow dancers’ learning experience. If you have a question for the instructor, feel free to ask!

5.

Uplift fellow dancers regardless of their dance journey. Be welcoming of newcomers both to the local community and to the dance as a whole.

Reporting Misconduct

If someone knowingly or unknowingly breaches the code of conduct,  or makes you or another member of our community feel unsafe, please let us know by submitting a report. You have the option to remain 100% anonymous if you choose.

Levels of Infractions

Yellow

An offense that could come from ignorance rather than malice, a yellow infraction will be viewed as a learning opportunity wherein the offender can receive correction, apologize, and demonstrate a willingness to ameliorate their behavior in the future. Such infractions include, but are not limited to: disrespecting workshop instructors, inappropriate or lewd remarks, micro-aggressions, hands touching where they shouldn’t be during a social dance, or practicing unsafe moves on the social dance floor.

Orange

An orange offense would be either two yellow infractions or an infraction of increased severity. An orange infraction will likely come from repeated poor behavior or a situation that creates the potential for harm. Orange infractions include, but are not limited to: abusive language; unsafe dance movements (aerials, etc.) on a crowded floor; openly racist, misogynistic, homophobic, or transphobic language; sexual harassment; or combative behavior.

Red

A red infraction is either two orange infractions enacted within the same 12-month period, or an extremely severe infraction. This level of infraction arises from an undisputedly harmful action. These infractions include, but are not limited to: sexual, verbal, or physical assault; stalking; abusive behavior; or criminal behavior.

Two of the same level of infraction repeated within a 12-month period will count as the next level of infraction (example: a yellow infraction in February and a yellow infraction in November will equal the severity of an orange infraction).

Accountability

We take safety very seriously, and want to foster an environment that welcomes communication and feedback.

Note: Reports can be submitted as anonymously as you would like in order to feel comfortable, but in some cases you may want to provide your own information in order to more fully rectify the situation. We promise that we treat every report with due consideration. We maintain a two-week deliberation timeline in order to not only investigate potential infractions, but also to create an action plan to ensure that the situation is addressed properly. At the instance of reporting, our policy is to always trust the reporter. As such, depending on the severity of the reported infraction, we may ask the person who reports and the party or parties involved to abstain from our events during that two-week period so that they do not need to subject themselves to a potentially uncomfortable environment until we can guarantee that an action plan has been put into place.

Potential plans include, but are not limited to: soliciting formal apologies, recommending options for further education to prevent recurrences, providing additional supervision, suspending an individual from events, or—in extreme cases—inviting an individual not to return to Remix Weekly events.

Prevention

Though we hope that infractions will be a rare occurrence, we want to take the initiative and prevent situations from escalating in the first place. For this purpose we will have designated safety personnel at each event. Their purpose is not only to passively keep an eye out for potentially harmful behavior, but also to be available as resources should you wish to notify them of any concerns. While all of our safety staff members uphold the highest standard of consideration, discretion, and care, we understand that some individuals have different levels of comfort. Therefore, we will always have a minimum of two safety staff members present at all times, and they will be wearing a visible [item] to indicate that they are a safe space.
